What Is Picking?

Picking is a technique that we use to play the guitar. It basically just means playing one string at a time, but the technique employed should involve resting the picking hand on the guitar, usually on the bridge or just above it. Resting the fingers below the strings is ok for beginners, but shouldn’t be kept for long. The better option is to develop awesome technique as early on as possible. I have a student who is only in year 4 at school and he is awesome at picking because he naturally finds it comfortable to rest his hand near the bridge.

The pick should also be held similar to how you would hold a pen. This step is often overlooked by guitar teachers, which is why it’s something we focus on at UGA.
